Dr. Carl Doeller Lessons Learned . . .

Doc Doeller was a PowerHouse/Zone Youth Ministry Leader for twenty years, 1984-2004! He was one of the oldest youth leaders in the world by age, but never old in his heart. What lessons did you learn from Carl? Share your thoughts, we must never forget, and pass on his legacy to others through this post.

"Doc" was such an inspiration to all the youth at Trinity over the years. He always had such kind and gentle words for everyone. He was truly a blessing to all who knew him. I thank God for placing "Doc" in our lives for all of those years.
"Doc" taught me the power of listening.
When you listen, greater love can extend from your life to others. Dick Foth has often said, "When you know someones history, you can love them more..." Carl Doeller would listen to young hearts, love them, and pray.
"Doc" was seventy-three years old when his PowerHouse journey started. He was a hero to many because in such a busy world he would take time and listen.
Doc,
Was a standard by which all who follow will be judged. This was not his mind set, he just loved us and all those who came in the years after. I know he was a blessing to the many Youth Pastors that followed and ran with the PH Legacy. Pastors Comenzo, Vandanna, Batchelder, Rosenberg and Harrison. Our History is Great!
Doc, once told me after a loud Friday Night of Ministry. That all he needed to do was turn down his hearing aids and all was fine. That is just the way he was, Honest and to the point.
His home was always open to the young people, I remember his train garden and lots of friendship shared at his home. When others of his generation were tired and going to bed he was on his way to Howard Johnons, TGIFridays, Friendy's, Pizza Hut with us!
What a great man...I hvae SO many memories!
David, you said some great things about the "Doc" style of leadership:
"he just loved us;
he was a blessing;
his home was always open;
he was on his way..with us."
Oh Lord, we pray that you would raise up more people for such a time as this . . .
One of the most important things I remember about Carl was that he was the most "real" Christian I knew. He never pretended to be anything other than he was with those who knew and loved him and He loved each of us unreservedly. I can't pin any one thing down about him because that would diminish how as a whole person he influenced me. Carl was like a father to me...a girl who never had a father in her life and for that I will always be grateful. If there is anyone I look forward to seeing again its Carl. He promised me a waltz when we met again in Glory! *smiles*
I gave a speach at Johns Hopkins University for a public speaking class and it was voted the favorite speach by the class.
It was not the my poor performance at giving the speach that won this praise, but the subject. I spoke of Dr. Carl Doeller and how he was a blessing.
I spoke of how he removed my fear of growing old.
Doc's love for life and optimism provided a young person with the inspiration that every stage in a person life can be lived with purpose and passion.
Doc showed me how much power there is in a simple smile and hug. The importance to let people know how very happy you are to see them, and to let them know they are welcome and accepted.
“Life gives us brief moments with another...but sometimes in those brief moment we get memories that last a life time...”
James Wright
Thinking about Carl this week, the third year anniversary of his death. His life is recorded 11/12/10 - 01/08/06! What a dash he had between the dates! "Doc" would have been 100 earth years in 2010 - but now he is part of the great crowd of Heaven, as the song says, by James Moore,
"Never grow old, never grow old,
In a land where we’ll never grow old; Never grow old, never grow old, In a land where we’ll never grow old.
I have heard of a land on the faraway strand, ’Tis a beautiful home of the soul; Built by Jesus on high, where we never shall die,
’Tis a land where we never grow old.
Never grow old, never grow old,
In a land where we’ll never grow old; Never grow old, never grow old, In a land where we’ll never grow old."
But, then that was "Doc", he was "never old." I love, honor, and remember Carl today.
I remember sitting in his living room reminiscing on his life, particularly about his wife and children. As we looked at pictures you could see the love he had for them was just so apparent. It was a testimony to me….a testimony of love and commitment.
We put this video together back in 2004, take a look at the 00:45 mark, and you'll see the "Doc" (footage from 24 years ago)and plus PowerHouse friends too:
